Album review: Standing Tall by Imaani

[review]

For those familiar with Incognito, Imaani, who was introduced to the music industry by Jocelyn Brown, must be a guarantee of great music and undeniable solid talent. Not only she has featured in 10 Incognito albums, also being one of the band’s key voices, the Derby-born singer has also collaborated with no less than Nile Rodgers, Chaka Khan, Maceo Parker, Betty Wright, UB40 and the list goes on and on.
After so many years of career made of impressive collaborations with some giants of the music industry, Imaani is finally ready to release her debut solo album, Standing Tall, out on Dome Records.
Opening with Ten Thousand, a sophisticated mid-tempo that unsurprisingly reminds of some of Incognito’s best works, the whole album spans from mid-tempo tunes to soulful ballads that all share Imani’s impressive vocal range and ability to take different shapes according to the songs’ mood. Fall Or Fly is the highlight of the album, permeated with drama and warm feelings, as opposed to the title track that offers a more upbeat, funk version of this incredibly versatile artist.
Standing Tall is one of those albums that grow on the listener time after time, until it reaches a point where it turns into a classic of its genre.

The album is available on iTunes and Amazon.
