After winning 5 ARIA Music Awards with their second album Down The Way – including album of the year – the Australian siblings are coming back with a brand new album. Angus & Julia Stone will be out on Virgin/EMI on August 1 with the promise to be the album that will definitely propel the folk-blues duo into stardom.
From the first notes of the opening track A Heartbreak, the album catches the listener’s attention with its folky arrangements and addictive melody, followed by the Bowiean guitars of My Word For It. From the beautiful strings of the Police-ish Grizzly Bear to the acid guitars and the Massive Attack-esque basses of Death Defying Acts – probably the best tune on the album – the delicate voices of Angus and Julia alternate and intertwine perfectly fitting in the musical frame of the album, which is lyrically mature and musically compact, bringing a sense of continuity all along the 13 tracks.
The atmospheres of Main Street take us to distant oceans and warm sunny days, at times it’s almost possible to smell the sea and feel the heat on your skin. The album closes with the opening country guitars of Crash And Burn in a crescendo of intensity that takes to a finale filled with beautiful scratching electric guitars.
Angus & Julia Stone is equally perfect as a musical background or to be listened to during a long trip on the road, with its quiet, peaceful atmospheres that tell of dreamy lands and musical journeys.
