Icebreaker: Kraftwerk Uncovered live @ Science Museum IMAX in London

Icebreaker Kraftwerk Uncovered live photos by Oscar Tornincasa http://photoblog.oskaro.it for rebelrebelmusic.com

Score: 8.5/10

They did it again. Icebreaker and Science Museum Head of Research Tim Boon, teamed up again to continue the exploration of electronic music through live music and film.

The British ensemble began their collaboration with the London Science Museum back in 2009 when they performed their live version of Brian Eno’s Apollo and now they’re re-imagining Kraftwerk’s works. Although Kraftwerk are more popular for their enormous contribution to electronic music – they are considered indeed the fathers of electronica – their first works remind us that the Dusseldorf band started with a more acoustic approach, where they experimented with flutes, violins and electric guitars, making them perfectly fitting a spot in the Krautrock scene. Riding this early wave, Icebreaker presented quite radical re-inventions of Kraftwerk songs, so radical some pieces sounded unrecognisable. From Autobhan to Megaherz, the 12-piece line up, perfectly synchronised with the film on the background, turned Kraftwerk works into hypnotising symphonies with pan-pipes and electric violas replacing synths riffs.

Icebreaker perfromance was like a transcendental experience, a sort of deep meditation exploring the contrast between the optimism of the trust in future technology and how progress leaves its marks on the surrounding space.

Highly recommended for a music journey hard to forget.
