Live Review: Pat Metheny Group at the Eventim Apollo

Pat Metheny group live in London photos by Oscar Tornincasa http://photoblog.oskaro.it for www.rebelrebelmusic.com

Score: 8.5/10

On June 11th, Pat Metheny and his Group walked on stage at the Hammersmith Apollo in London to deliver a 3-hour show that started with a 10-minute solo performance by Metheny on his custom-built 42-string Pikasso guitar. Chris Potter (winds), Antonio Sanchez (drums) and Ben Williams (bass) joined him soon after for a fusion jazz explosion starting with the live rendition of Come And See from their 2012 album Unity Band. From Police People to James the whole band unleashed their overflowing talent wrapping in melodic ideas and rhythms from various parts of the world, before being joined by multi-instrumentalist Giulio Carmassi and The Orchestration Project to focus mainly on pieces taken from the current release Kin (←→), starting with the title track to peak with On Day One that offered the occasion for a mesmerising tenor solo by Potter.

The show then unravelled into a series of duets between Metheny and every single member of the band. Just the time for three encores and several highly deserved standing ovations before it was time for the genius from Missouri to close the show with a hypnotising guitar solo rendition of The Beatles’ “And I Love Her“.

A must see for every human being with functioning ears, with a warning: it might be highly addictive.
